You are here: IDEA > Africa

Africa is making great strides towards establishing democratic practices across the continent, with more and more countries initiating or repeating multi-party elections that are mostly free, fair and peaceful. Despite these gains, challenges to democracy remain such as; weak political institutions and parties, underrepresentation of women in political life, contentious and violent elections and limited media freedom.

Work programme

International IDEA takes a holistic approach to supporting democracy building in Africa, contributing across almost all areas of its mandate – elections, constitution building, political parties and representation, citizen led assessments of democracy at national and local level, and democracy and development. Integrated into IDEA’s ongoing activities, the gender component examines empowerment strategies for women in political parties.
